Would you buy a home 350 ft from freight train tracks? The train comes 4x/week going very slow and passes within a few minutes, but who knows what it’s carrying.

I did read that transporting hazardous materials by freight rail is considered common, and must be transported in the proper, government-approved rail car or container. I think around 7.5% of the material transported is considered hazardous. It’s probably well contained but I guess you never know.... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wonder about nuclear waste too. 
Yes I am the same person who inquired about the prison. The homes here are beautiful but available locations are less than ideal at the moment.

We lived by train tracks once and I never cared or thought about what it was hauling lol. My biggest annoyance was the noise. For some reason they ALWAYS felt the need to lay on the horn right by our neighborhood.

If it's only 4x a week you will get used to it. We air bnb'd at a place like this and the people didn't mind at all, they grew a "small town relationship " with the driver and he would blow the whistle as a way to say hello as he went by. If it was twice a day I'd say that would be annoying

I’ve lived right next to a train track and the noise drove me nuts. I never was able to get used to it, I rented but I have heard that selling in the future will be harder because a lot of people won’t buy a house that close to a train track

The train station. It took some getting used to, my daughter sleeps well through it all. But we are over it.... in the summer / fall we hardly have the windows open because it is so damn loud and annoying

I wouldn’t look at it from any of the ways you or some others have given, like what’s being transported or the noise, etc.  I would look at how it effects the value of the property and home.  If it’s near tracks, it’s likely the building/s will receive extra wear and tear.  It’s logical to assume that the value will be decreased because of being so close to the tracks.  Instead of the esthetics of the houses that you are considering, it would be much smarter to look at the value and potential increase of value in the future.  If the value is effected negatively now, then it isn’t a good investment, generally.

I mean.. Where I live (small country) people live near train tracks that come 2-10 times per hour.. And more.. But more common in smaller cities is about 3 times per hour. 
People live there..
Not sure if I could though, but 4x per week I wouldn't even consider having it affect how I feel about a house.

It wouldn't bother me. If it was more often then i wouldn't go through. Trains are more annoying then hazardous but it sounds like your situation would be manageable. I used to live in a trailer home super close and we couldn't leave anything breakable out because it shook so badly.

I rented a house that had train tracks in the backyard - maybe 25 feet away. It came twice a day and once was early in the morning and it always woke me up.

My tiny town of 1100 has trains go through the middle of it multiple times a day. My husband works for Union Pacific. There is no problem of living by rail tracks. The town I work in of 10,000 plus people has the same tracks go through them. The same tracks are the main tracks of Union Pacific that run through the state of Iowa.
