Should 18 really be considered grown?

Question

I was talking to my mom and she was saying my 18 year old brother could legally be my guardian (if anything happens) I’m 16 so I could go in like a foster system. But once You turn 18 they take you out of the system, and what if you don’t have resources to be on your own?

Absolutely not. If it’s not old enough to even drink alcohol (in the USA), then it’s not old enough to care solely for yourself, and possibly have dependents, in my opinion. 
Don’t get me wrong, you’re not a child at 18, but you’re also not grown.

I think it depends on their maturity level not their age number. But being financially independent in the US is something that is extremely difficult

Also there are specific programs for post foster system called Transitional Age Youth programs that help with housing, job/career/college etc. you may have to advocate with a social worker though.  Those are available until either21 or 25 I think.

I think if there is an oldest sibling that is 18, it can be useful for them to take care of younger siblings. It’s sometimes the lifeline to keep brothers and sisters together. If the teenage ones work, that helps. I would still say the 18 year old needs not to feel like they are a full parental replacement. I think largely that the legal adult age is extremely arbitrary

Some 18 year olds may be “mature for their age” but they are not grown. My friend has had a job, paid rent, and lived on her own since she was 13. Grown behavior does not make someone an adult.

When I was 18, I had already graduated high school, had my own apartment with my boyfriend, had a job, and paid my own bills so yes I would consider that grown.
