accidentally left gas stove on?

so I have a gas stove and I was in my room watching a movie (my room is connected to the kitchen) and suddenly I smell gas. immediately I get up and check the stove - no fire, but it’s on. I turn it off immediately and ask my roommate what’s going on - she must’ve accidentally turned it on. I opened the windows in my bathroom and the door to the deck for a bit and also the one in my room - we don’t have windows in our kitchen to open. should we be ok? i don’t know how long it was on but I don’t know how long for exactly. I keep freaking out like we are going to get poisoned or something. I just walked out there after like 5 minutes and it still smells like gas.
