We got engaged in 2010, bought the house in 2012 and then got married in 2014. We both wanted to put more money into a house than a wedding so for us it made more sense to get settled into our new home before getting married.

I would get the house first because if it’s going to be a lot of money for a ring, you’re going to take away from your down payment or your closing costs or have a high debt to income ratio. The house makes more sense to me.

I would never put someone’s name on a house with me if we weren’t married. That is a HUGE commitment and a lot of responsibility. Not only that, but your credit and finances are on the line too. 2 things that can make or break your future. God forbid something happens and you two break up and now all the sudden one of you is stuck paying for it, or you both just screwed up your credit and finances. Definitely do not get a house that you couldn’t afford on your own. My husband and I just bought a house with only my finances, because if one of us were to lose our jobs then we could still potentially afford it. Going into a house with shared finances puts you at a higher risk of having to sell or foreclose if something bad happened.

I honestly wouldn’t put both mine and another persons name on a house unless we were engaged first. However I also think you should live with some one before getting engaged. I own my home and my boyfriend moved in with me. We split everything 50/50 cost wise but we agreed his name doesn’t get put on the house till we are married.

We never had plans to be married, so we bought a house, sold a house, had a baby, moved a few more times, ended up getting married, and are happily renting so we can easily pick up and move on to our next adventure. Do whatever works for you 🤷🏼‍♀️

I did things so backwards lol. My mom was pisssssed at me 😂 I got pregnant , we weren’t dating and my family didn’t even know the guy. Yikes I know!! Then I told everyone I was pregnant , they all met him after he moved in, we had our baby, got engaged, got married and now onto baby number 2 lol. My situation was ridiculous but now it’s ok gravy 😂
