Is anyone putting away Christmas gifts and not opening them right away

Kristina

I read an article this morning that Christmas can be very overwhelming for young kids with all the toys they receive. It’s why they can show disinterest in something you would except them to love, move between toys quickly, or end up playing with the boxes since it’s less stimulating then some of the toys.

I know we have maybe taken 1/3 of the gifts out of the boxes for our little one to play with and still have gifts wrapped under the tree we haven’t opened for him. I’m honestly considering putting some of them away and taking it out slowly to be able to add new toys to the rotation between now and his birthday. Is anyone else doing this or have done this?

I put alot away because they were extremely overwhelmed and overstimulated Christmas day. No joke cried all day. And of course everyone bought them toys that make noise when I specifically asked for things that don't lol. So now most of it is put away and I will switch things out here and there. I find when they have too many toys out they can't focus on anything for too long anyways

I can’t even look through the aisle of vetch toys without feeling completely overwhelmed/overstimulated and I’m a full grown adult 🥴

I hate when people say it’s vtech so it’s educational so it’s not a toy 😫 if it makes noise it isn’t always the best toy, sometimes the simple puzzles and stacking rings are the best

We didn’t because we got Westley like two toys in addition to his nugget so it wasn’t overwhelming. 😅 other family got him clothes and my mil got this electric four wheeler that we won’t be attempting to put together and he didn’t understand it when he opened it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, we did the same for his birthday and Christmas last year as well. His grandmas usually go overboard. This year I was very thankful one went overboard in the clothing department. 😅

I have only ever bought my kids like two things for Christmas and birthdays. Between both sets of grandparents, aunts, and uncles... they get plenty otherwise.

This year Christmas was very slow for us lol, he only had about 10 new toys but he would open one and play with for a while then open the next one, get a snack, read a book then open the next. A couple of the toys he got are outdoor toys that he really can't use until spring. So he didn't seemed overwhelmed. We intentionally kept Christmas very small

I wish we had done this. Everyone wanted to open gifts on Zoom so we went through them all and it was madness. Luca was definitely overstimulated and shy because of the camera.

It’s nice that everyone wants to be in your sons life but it’s a lot for them to take in. Vic ended up being so overstimulated just with having people over in the morning he crashed and took an extra nap from 11-12 before opening presents. It’s a lot for them to take in and everyone putting a lot of attention on them.

We have a few opened and the rest in a tote waiting to be opened. He doesn’t seem overwhelmed. Just has enough to play with currently so we’ll open the rest later. Lol

We didn’t but Amelias toys are mostly wood or coloring things. They didn’t really over stimulate her.

Yes! We are going through all of the toys in our toy room and donating/rotating toys. We will probably put a lot of the new toys my 4 year old got with small parts (lego & toy mobile) in her fort in our basement. The “stuff” is always overwhelming this time of year.

We didn’t really have a lot to overwhelm her.

We only had a handful of gifts on Christmas, he had a couple to open 2 weeks before and he’ll have a little bit more to open next weekend.. so ours are spaced out. If they were all at once I can definitely see how he would get overstimulated, so that’s a good idea!
