When did you start rice cereal/oatmeal?

My baby girl is 4 months and the dr wants me to start rice cereal. But it seems early. Anyone start this early?

Never I don’t believe rice cereal is good for babies tottaly unnecessary.
Give them Whole Foods meats, veggies, healthy fats and fruits.

As your pedi is definitely outdated and ill informed that rice cereal is not healthy and 0 nutritional value. It isn’t recommended to give to infants anymore. It’s pure junk garbage. Cause major constipation. 
Also all major health organizations recommendations are 6m for solids due to gut maturity. A 4m old doesn’t have the proper enzymes to digest solids properly. All ready signs need to be met first before starting solids. (Listed below) 
Drs aren’t nutritionists and have little to no education in nutrition. They practice medicine, not nutrition. They are to follow the board certified pedi nutritionists at all major health orgs but sadly a lot do not.

Rice cereal isn’t as recommended as before. It’s empty calories and offers no nutritional benefits. Oatmeal cereal is a better alternative but I personally prefer to stand by what the AAP and WHO recommends for introducing solids and that is six months.

Forgot this. This is very important when you start solids. And only 1-2 TBS once a day for a few weeks then slowly increase the amounts. It’s not important to do 3 meals a day until 1yr. So you have plenty of time for that.

When i worked at a day care we always told parents to start when they start getting curious about foods. You don’t have to use rice cereal, you can make your own baby foods with mashed and thinned table foods. All babies are different.

It really depends on your baby’s specific needs and why the doctor made the recommendation. For example my baby was sitting and interested in food at 4 months. She would not take a bottle under any circumstance. Our doctor recommended starting rice or oatmeal cereal, as well as purées, so that baby could get breast milk (through the food) when I was away.

We started the tiniest bit of oatmeal before bed around 4 months. Dr was ok with it since our son was huge at the time. Nothing regular until 6 months. No issues. Every baby is different.
