Even if someone did not die it is normal to feel like we need space now and then.  Especially when something bad has happened or stressed out. Just let him know he isn't alone.  You can send him a good morning I love you message and I'm here for you message but don't blow up his phone.  Dont feel offended or anything it is normal to want some space. Just let him know u are here for him anytime.

Everyone handles things differently. Some want to be surrounded by people 24/7 and thrive with the constant support.....others wnat to crawl into a hole and be left alone. 
After I lost someone very close to ms I didnt take phone calls or visitors for 6 months. I pushed everyone who wasnt immediate family away.

I wanted space from absolutely everyone for months after my sister passed in fall 2019. It takes time to process and I had to rethink what I want to do with my life because the loss was so close. You will need to operate at his speed for a bit
