Fat phobia and discrimination in the work place

Haylee

OKAY! So. I realize this is not period related. But it’s just woman related and I need some advice.

I’m not a small woman, by any means, and I know this. And many other women at my work place look similar to me or may even be a little bigger than I am.

I’ve always worn Nike shorts to work, I’ve been there for almost 2 years and no one has ever told me that I can’t wear them. And I never thought I shouldn’t as I’ve seen many other women wearing them.

I walked into the front office to grab some medicine for a terrible headache I had and my boss precedes to tell me “Your shorts are too short.” And give me a look and attitude when she says it.

I was flaaaammmmiiiinnnggg mad when I walked out of there. I couldn’t even say anything in response because I couldn’t believe she said that to me.

Now, this might not sound like a big deal to a lot of you, she’s just saying my shorts are a little short, right? But no. I’ve talked to other women, very skinny women, at my work who wear the exact same shorts as i was wearing today and they all told me that our boss has never said a single word to them about their shorts being too short.

On top of all of this, my boss herself comes into work in short dresses and very short shorts consistently.

So tell me why is it not okay for me to wear shorts that fit me just like anyone else? Why are they all the sudden too short on me?

I plan to wear the shorts again tomorrow almost in the hope that she will say something so that I have a chance to call her out on it. I won’t be rude, I’ll be respectful, but I just can’t sit here and not stand up for what I believe in and that’s that I don’t think you can discriminate against me and what I wear (something everyone else wears!!!) just because I’m fat and society has conditioned you to think that I don’t look okay, but a skinny girl does.

Has anyone ever been through something similar? How did you handle the situation? I’m really struggling with wanting to stay at this job as it is, and this just added to it.
