Baby weight loss
My baby girl was born on December 17 and weighed 7lbs 2oz. My midwife visited me two days after delivery, but did not weigh her because “breastfed newborns loose weight in the first few days, so there isn’t really a point to weigh her now”. Baby was having good output in the first week, but by the second she was only having about 4-5 wet diapers a day. I asked the midwife and she said that it was close to the minimum so she’s probably fine.
I was a little concerned still so I decided to take her to my doctor. My doctor was on holidays so I couldn’t get in until yesterday. They weighed my baby and she has lost 13% of her birthweight! 🙁 the doctor checked her out and baby is completely healthy, but the weight loss is concerning. The doctor had me feed her and weigh her again. She gained 30grams from the feed. The doctor said that was good, but would like to check again on Monday.
So a few things... baby hadn’t been seen by anyone since the midwife visit on her 3rd day of life. Baby was only weighed when she was born and then yesterday. We did weigh her on the scale at home and it looked like she was gaining, obviously our scale is off. Doctor checked her latch, looks good. I have tons of milk. I have been feeding her every 1-3 hours a day and 4-5 hours at night. I have to wake her to feed at night. I am going to try feeding her more often at night.
I’m feeling like a failure as a mother. I didn’t think she had lost so much weight, I actually thought she was gaining.
Has anyone gone through something similar? Was there anything wrong with breastfeeding or baby?
