My miscarriage experience - week 9
I wanted to share this as prior to having my miscarriage at week 9, I would have wanted to know what someone else’s experience was. I am a healthy 32 year old and this was my first pregnancy. We had been ttc for 5 months before our bfp.
We found out week 7 that there was a high probability of miscarriage due to an abnormally low fetal heart rate - indicating a chromosome abnormality. Next ultrasound at week 8 showed a normal heartbeat but embryo had not grown in size. Were told it could go either way but I knew it wasnt viable. On 9wd3, I started to miscarry naturally at home. I had started spotting 2 days before, just brown and light pink. Didnt get red until 2 days after spotting. By day 3 after spotting started, it was around 3 pm and was clear it was turning into more of a period-like bleed.
That evening, I was up all night with severe cramps. A heated water bottle really helped as I rotated between being in bed with a maxi pad and on the toilet passing large clots. It was like grape sized sacs of blood dropping out after the cramps. I wasnt sure it i had passed the gestational sac or tissue, but i do remember one particularly large clot coming out that may have been the sac. Because it had stopped growing at 6w5d, i think this helped make the miscarriage less painful. It continued into the next day (passing clots) but i was able to get some rest. thankfully my doctor was kind enough to prescribe me some strong pain killers which i took with 800 mg ibuprofen during the most painful parts.
I confirmed 2 days later via ultrasound (which is also traumatic to have while you are bleeding and after a miscarriage) that i had passed everything naturally. I was so grateful for this and relieved the experience was over.
We have decided to wait until after my next period to start trying again. I want to give my body and mind a minute to heal and restore its balance. It also gives us both time to focus on egg and sperm health, eating well, supplementing, and exercising before trying again.
I do feel encouraged to have learned that my body is ready for a baby. My uterus did its job, it just wasnt the right embryo to go the distance. I have come to the conclusion that I would have rather experienced this than 2 more months of ttc.
My heart goes out to anyone reading this post because you are experiencing a miscarriage or anticipating one. I promise you will get through it and heal. Its so hard. Please be gentle on yourselves! Baby dust to all!
