Have you switched to a ‘big kid’ bed yet?

What worked for your little one?  Give me all the tips!

We switched my first son right after he turned 2 to toddler bed then to a big boy bed/twin at two and a half. It wasn’t hard but he also quickly stopped staying in bed once I left the room so the bedtime routine became a challenge and took a long long time to get him to go to sleep. Now with my 2nd son, I am waiting as long as I possibly can before moving him because once he goes to bed now, I get quiet time with my older son and we get to bed early (hubby works at night). Baby 3 is due in June so once she is ready to move to the crib, I will move our 2 y/o into twin bed. So hopefully he will be 2.5ish the earliest when we transition. My advise is before you start, be sure you have a solid bedtime routine and your toddler is good about following the routine and going to bed alone (is still awake when you leave the room and falls asleep without your help). This will make the transition easier and help them stay in bed. It is also good, if you can, to first convert the crib to toddler so they get an “intro” to the concept of open bed, then move them to twin once that new routine is going good for a little while. Just my thoughts from our experience.

A few months ago she figured out how to climb out on her own and climb on her changing table that's attached to her crib. So for her safety we removed the front bar since it turns into a toddler bed. Then put a toddler mattress we got long ago but never used since we didnt like the quality and put it on the bottom for if she rolled off her bed. Which did happen a few times. Took a bit for her to get use to. And she started opening the door to her room. She learned not to when she wakes till we come to get her since staircase is beside her room. And she sleeps in her bed perfect now and doesn't roll off anymore. Got her own pillow and comforter. All sesame street which she loved. She does so well now. Transitions have never really been hard for her. Sleep regressions though were HELL. Now my 5 month old i can't even get to fall asleep anywhere but the swing which is also a bassinet. Hes too big for it but refuses to fall asleep in his crib.

My little guy was in a big kid bed at 9 months, although he was the same size as my now 16m old when he was 9m. 😅

We had a convertible crib and took one side down when my daughter was 18 months old. No issues at all! She loves bedtime and is a great sleeper though.

Baby switched 2 weeks before his 2nd birthday and did pretty well considering he's slepted with us in our bed since he was born. We just got a bunch of his favorite stuffed toys, he did cry the first 2 night but just kept explaining to him that's his bed now and mommy and daddy have their own bed and he got it eventually. He was excited about it when he first saw it so we tried to keep it a good and exciting thing to do instead of making it a bad experience ¿ idk how yl explain it lol he's done so well, he does still cry to come and sleep with mama but I'm due in 2 weeks so I just keep reminding him we could cuddle before bed but he sleeps in his big boy bed now.

I just took the front of the crib off and put a rail up in November before she turned 2. She was doing great with the cots at school so I figured why not? She had no problem the first couple weeks but I don’t know about you guys but my daughter hit the two year sleep regression HARD multiple waking up through the night now and crazy separation anxiety. I honestly wish I waited to do the switch because now she just keeps running out of her bed 🤦🏻‍♀️

We want to cause we’re due a sibling in 1 month and could do with the cot. But I don’t dare to cause I’m scared he’ll be hard to put to bed. Right now (touch wood) bedtime is going great and he hasn’t tried to climb out of his cot yet. Guess I’m scared he’ll just climb back out of a toddler bed if he’s not tired enough, just because he can. At the moment he can lie and talk to himself or look at a toy for a little while before falling asleep, but he knows he’d need our help getting out.

We swapped to a toddler bed a few months ago (only because I already had one and needed to save space). I just put him in it asleep like I’ve always done with the pack n play. If he got up during the night, I just put him back in bed. He’s actually done great with it! He’ll go lay in it during the day and say night night. My next goal is to get him to fall asleep in it. He’s been putting himself to sleep on the couch so it shouldn’t be a problem. 
I wasn’t going to use a toddler bed, but my addition didn’t get built on the timeline I planned, so it is what it is. I bought him big boy sheets and blanket that he loves.

We have her crib mattress on the floor with a pool noodle to keep her from rolling. We do that for a few month then right to a regular twin bed+frame.
