23 and have never had normal periods?

I'm 23 and still don't have a normal period. It's always been extremely irregular. Before I started the pill, when it would come, it was extremely heavy and painful.

I tried switching to an IUD and had to get it taken out 6 months later because I bled for 6 months straight... Now I'm back on the pill and still not regulated.

Every time I go to the gyno, they obviously ask when my last period was and it usually hasn't been for awhile and they always are really confused and like "Could you need pregnant?" When I try explaining that I've never had a normal cycle, they look even more confused. Then come all the questions about whether or not I take my birth control right, skip the sugar pill week, blah blah blah...

Is there something wrong with me..? Every time I mention the irregularity of my cycle to people or medical staff, they always look at me like I have 3 heads. I'm concerned there is something going on... I've had cysts in the past and actually have very similar symptoms to endometriosis.
