i really really want to use tampons because they’d be very convenient for me, but they make me so squeamish and i’m scared. any tips?

Start asking your friends to help if you know someone who uses them. It's super simple once you get the hang of it. I find the plastic applicators to be easier than the cardboard or the ones without. They always come with directions. Read them fully. Make sure you're relaxed when you're doing it because it does take practice and patience.

Use plastic, not cardboard applicators, and practice when u know u will be home. Read instructions...dont use on lightest day in the beginning because the soaked ones come out easier...

Try the tampons with the applicator. It will help you push the tampon where it needs to go. Tampons shouldnt hurt if you place them correctly. 
You may need to try different positions in order to help you like swatting or one leg on the tiolet bowl. 
Use the right tampon for your period flow. For example, super for heavy flow. 
Ultra- really heavy flow
Super- heavy flow
Regular- medium to light
Light- light flow
Wearing the right absorbency tampon will prevent toxic shock syndrome. Also, do not sleep in your tampons (wear an overnight pad) and change them every 3-4 hours depending on your flow. 
Start with the lowest absorbency tampon first then increase it if you need to. Example, wearing regular then switching to super because your flow is heavier than you thought.
