I have a question and no hate comments please. I've never done this before.

So my other 2 sons have Godparents. They were mainly chosen by their father. He didnt want any of my family to be God parents just because he didnt like them. Well we are expecting our 3rd. And currently going through a divorce. Am I able go pick Godparents without him? He doesn't really care for God parents he doesnt see the point. But I was wondering if I could choose without him? How does this work. If anyone has advice please let me know. Also our attornys told us not to speak to eachother until more custody issues get resolved.

If whoever you’re picking are not legal godparents (meaning that’s who would get custody of your child in the event something happened to you both), then by all means pick whoever you want. Non legal godparents are just symbolic and have no rights to the child. Our son has godparents, but they’re not his legal godparents, they’re just people very close to us that are like family so giving them that title brought us closer together and shows they have a special place in our lives.

When my ex husband and I got a divorce we had to fill out all sorts of paperwork. One of the papers asked who would get our child If I (The custodial parent) were to die. On the paperwork I put my sister and my ex husband agreed and signed. Every state is probably different but that's just my experience. My ex was very abusive and ended up giving up his parental rights.
