When to start birth control?

I just got birth control, and I have about ten days till my period starts. If I start now will I skip my period?

Answer

The first time I started the pill my doctor told me to wait until the first day of my period because the pill will be effective right away. 
Now the second time around (I took a year break of BC) I just decided to just start right away since I won’t have a period in like 3 weeks. My period did not come until I took my placebo pill. So yes my period did skip.
