Pictures with ex

Is it normal that my boyfriend still have pictures with his ex on his phone? I asked why are they there, he said he never deletes pictures plus he is in the picture and it's part of his trip to New York so he doesn't wanna delete it. Is this normal? I was extremely mad and he is acting so cool and actually defending himself.
