Do I need to wear a bra while breastfeeding?

I haven’t worn one at all in about 5 years because I have chronic inflammation in my ribcage and spine and wearing one makes things super painful for me unfortunately. Ive tried multiple different bras and none seem to be comfortable so I just gave up. Anyway, I was wondering if there’s any reason why one would be necessary for nursing and if I need to invest in nursing bras or if I could just wear tank tops instead?

A tank top with a built in bra will hold nursing pads. I never wore a bra while breastfeeding.

You'll just have leakage everywhere since a feed shirt isn't close held to your boobs for the pads to help

You could leak through your tank tops and nursing pads may not fit as well. As well your nipples rubbing against the shirt might hurt. But if its comfortable for you, do it. Its actually better to not wear a bra so your breasts dont get compressed.

When your breasts are full of milk they’ll be heavier so you might want something for support. Also you’ll probably leak a lot in the beginning. Can you do a cami? If it doesn’t bother you, you’ll probably want something a little tighter that you can put pads into so your shirts aren’t soaking wet

I think it’s just preference. At home I wear the CAKYE nursing bras from Amazon because I leak a lot so I’d rather my bra catch it than have a soaking wet shirt. I tried to go without a bra and I was changing my shirt multiple times a day. Those bras are super soft and lightweight. I wear a more supportive Playtex nursing bra that clips down when I’m out or at work.

I just wore nursing tanks at home or a wire free bra. I only wore a nicer nursing bra with underwire when I left the house

Buy the sleep nursing bras. They are the most comfortable and will give you some support. I’d recommend buying the washable nursing pads cause they hold up better.

In theory no you dont have to but you'll definitely want to wear nursing pads to prevent leakage.  So a nursing tank might be a more comfortable nursing option.   Even a sleep nursing bra might work.  They're mostly just there for holding the pads in place

It all depends on if you have any leaking. I never experienced leaking unless I was away from my son for multiple feedings and didn’t get a chance to pump. In a pinch, I would just go into a bathroom stall abd manually express some milk into the toilet or into toilet paper if I was worried I was going to become engorged and start leaking while out in public.
