Any momsšŸ¤° here use šŸŒ±THCšŸŒ± while pregnant or šŸ¤±Breastfeeding?

I have an oral report done for my OB class on THC/Marijuana/Cannabis use while pregnant and breastfeeding, but thought why haven't I asked anyone here since I use this app.

May I ask: is it common to hear that other moms are using THC while pregnant? šŸ¤°And are you somewhat afraid of it affecting your baby?šŸ¤± Do you believe it could affect your baby's memory, growth development or mental stability later on in life?

My OB and lactation consultant told me no amount of THC is safe while breastfeeding and to stay away from marijuana until Iā€™m done breastfeeding.

I use THC while pregnant šŸ˜Œ In my first trimester i lost 25 pounds (and i continue to lose weight at 18 weeks) because of severe morning sickness. The risks associated with THC is low birth weight and possible neurological growth slowing. The side effects to Zofran in the first trimester are much much worse. THC and cannabinoids have been shown to fight coronavirus and users of THC are being infected at a much slower rate. I am a medical card holder too, and my doctors are aware of my usage while pregnant so i donā€™t really care what judgement Iā€™m going to get. Anecdotally, i know dozen of people to smoke through their pregnancy and have happy, healthy, neurotypical children while using THC while pregnant. THC helps various other mental illnesses i have, hence the medical card, and carries less birth risks than many other prescribed medications. I do not smoke while pregnant due to the risks associated with smoking. But Iā€™m not going to unmedicate myself when none of my doctors find it necessary. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

This is a topic that deserves more research and discussion. Itā€™s a shame that many moms are scared to come forward and admit usage to their doctors because of the stigmas associated with it. I was also diagnosed with severe morning sickness and although we tried 4 different nausea medications nothing worked and I would throw up everything I ate. I too lost a lot of weight during my pregnancy and was admitted more than once for dehydration. Marijuana use was the only thing that allowed me to keep food down. More research needs to be done but itā€™s ludicrous to believe that marijuana is way more harmful than many prescribed drugs on the market. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope through legalization, more research will be done to paint a better picture on the benefits and risks.

Most of the risks associated with THC use age while pregnant and breast feeding come from the fact we ethically can not test drugs on unborn babies. They canā€™t properly test fetal harm because of these restrictionsšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

My doctor and nurse sister have both told me itā€™s definitely not safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the people who claim to have smoked or done edibles their whole pregnancy or while they were breastfeeding and that their baby is fine is considered survivors bias and not a reason to do it.

Thank you, I appreciate your point of view and using your voice as scientific evidence has stated the harmful effects of THC use in pregnancy.

I took a breastfeeding class while pregnant and was told that there is no safe amount of marijuana to use while breastfeeding, since thc does pass through the milk . It was really drilled in that it was NOT safe. Seems like common sense but for a lot of people it's not. I did not use marijuana during my pregnancy, but when I had my first appointment they said they would test my baby at the hospital even if I had used marijuana 6 months prior to getting pregnant (which I hadn't done ). They also tested for drugs in urine routinely at my appointments. Mothers who tested positive do have a child services worker follow up with them at the hospital and they do test the baby before you go home.

Yes! I've seen and spoken with patients who had to do a drug test in the hospital. I've also had the opportunity to see that they test the cord blood. Thank you for commenting!

Anytime!! This is what my OB referred to when I asked about it! I had tried THC in the past for anxiety and wanted to know if it was safe during breastfeeding and he sent me this!

My childhood best friend started smoking weed while breastfeeding. Her baby is 18 months now & extremely small & still wonā€™t walk. Sheā€™s probably the size of a 10 months old. For some reason she continues to smoke & breast feed. She has a 2 year old that she breast fed but did not smoke with & she was a cubby baby & started walking early. I have a 3 year old and have been around babies most of my life. I know her baby is definitely delayed in everything. šŸ’”That being said I do not support THC while pregnant or breastfeeding and I no longer talk to my child hood best friend.

Thank you for commenting. That is very sad. As, I continue to study in Obstetrics I am seeing patterns of negative affect on neonates, infants, children and even adults from mothers using THC during their pregnancy.

i personally donā€™t believe a single negative thing thatā€™s out there about weed & pregnancy/breastfeeding. i donā€™t trust what doctors have to say about it because i go off of my own experience. itā€™s a natural thing that has no harmful effects on humans so why would it do anything harmful to your baby? use of it where i live is legal with a medical card, which i have.

i understand your concern but itā€™s not that i want it to be okay, i KNOW that itā€™s okay. i took lexapro my entire pregnancy for mental health reasons & had to go monthly to maternal fetal medicine to have my baby closely examined for any irregularities or heart defects. my baby was and is completely healthy, normal & ahead of himself as far as developmental milestones. there were some serious risks with taking lexapro while pregnant but they outweighed the risks of me being unmedicated. there isnā€™t a single medication that has 0 risks attached to it. weed however, does not affect the human brain the same as any given pill. iā€™m surprised that i have to even say that to you, considering you said youā€™ve smoked your whole life. you donā€™t need to believe everything thatā€™s put out there. there is indeed a stigma behind smoking while pregnant/breastfeeding but it is the safest thing out there as far as medications go.

What blows my mind is youā€™re seriously trying to compare the effects marijuana use has on a grown adult vs a developing fetus..šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø thereā€™s no comparison there there is literally a huge difference between the two and if you canā€™t figure that out clearly youā€™ve lost some brain cells. Iā€™ve smoked my whole entire life until I got pregnant and still donā€™t as of right now with my 1month old. You personally donā€™t believe anything about the negatives about it because youā€™re ā€œsurvivors bias.ā€ Donā€™t advocate for something that may effect someoneā€™s baby differently than yours smh. There are PLENTY of stories of negative things happening to babies born to women who thought it was smart to use marijuana while they were developing. Donā€™t ignore them just because you WANT it to be ok just because you did it. Have a good day.
