Should employers have the right to limit employees to only one workplace?
So in my country, the government has passed amendments to employment laws giving employers the right to limit employees to working in only one workplace. This amendment is mostly affecting people working in healthcare. The staff most affected are working in part-time and casual positions, they don’t get benefits, vacation time, or sick days and are instead paid a bit extra “in lieu of.” They’re often working these positions because hospitals try to hire as few full time staff as possible, to avoid having to pay out said benefits, vacation time and sick days. The employer can make use of this amendment any time up until the beginning of July (could be extended) and they have ZERO obligation to offer the employees extra hours to make up for their lost income. I get trying to limit the spread of COVID, but all this time they’ve been telling us that our PPE is enough to protect us... if that’s true, it should mitigate the risk of transmission in the workplace. Essentially, affected healthcare workers are doing society’s “dirty work” right now and being penalized financially for it. Do y’all feel that this is a government/employer over reach, or do you agree with the above change to employment laws?
