BFP now what?

Question

Planned on calling family doctor tomorrow (got my bfp Friday) 
1. I assumed I call my family doctor and then pick an obgyn after that? But I’m seeing other posts that say you pick an obgyn first and don’t even call your own family doctor.. 
2. My family doctor does deliver babies, so is that who I would see through my whole pregnancy? Or would I still need to find an obgyn? 
I really don’t know my doctor well, and would kind of prefer a female.

You have options.
If your family doctor provides gynecology and birth services, you can go through them if you’d like to. In fact, that is perfectly fine for most low risk women who wish to have a vaginal birth with few or no interventions.
An OBGYN is a surgeon. They can do vaginal births, but their specialty is cesarean sections. You’re more likely to experience medical interventions and it’s statistically more likely to end up in c-section when it otherwise wouldn’t with your regular gynecologist or midwife. If you’re in the 30% or so of high risk women, an OB is probably the way to go, however. 
A midwife (certified nurse midwife) focuses on unmedicated or “natural” birth (I prefer the term “unmedicated” because there’s no such thing as an unnatural birth. Whether vaginal or cesarean, a birth is a birth). Midwives often work closely with hospitals and specific OBs to help facilitate transfer of patients where needed or desired. Some midwives do home births, others are in a hospital practice or birth center practice.
I’m personally opting for a midwife. My mom had me at home with one and I’ve seen one for well women’s care since I was 17. My midwife works closely with the hospital next door and I’ve already met their preferred OB and he is absolutely wonderful! By far the best I’ve ever seen. My midwife is amazing, but I’m not sure if she offers home birth, if she doesn’t then I’ll settle for birth center (assuming I’m in the low risk category).

I started out going to a regular doc but switched to an OBGYN. I think a regular doc is fine if that’s who you like. I didn’t know her and didn’t feel any sort of way for switching. 
I got my BFP yesterday and will be going back to my same OBGYN.

It is just up to you. Our family doctor delivered me and my sister, but if you would rather have an obgyn, then you can get one. I believe if your pregnancy becomes complicated (hopefully it doesn’t), then your family doctor will refer you to an obgyn.

My sister did a family doctor for her first, and did an OB for her second. OBs are more specialized in this area, compared to a family doctor. It’s your choice. I went straight for an OB.
