December 2020- drive by delivery
My daughter Avery is my 2nd baby. I was terrified because of covid and tried my hardest not to think about delivery. However on 12/21/20 at 9 pm I felt a pain but I was not concerned because it went away and I went to sleep. At around 4am on 12/22/20 I was yanked out of my sleep by a very strong pain. I went to the bathroom and noticed some of my mucus plug had come away. I called the hospital and they told me to monitor it and wait for my water to break. I laid back down and kept experiencing pains. Eventually I couldn’t lay down anymore so I sat on the floor. The pain was intense and eventually I could not sit anymore and started to walk. At around 6:50am I started to calculate the contractions and realize they were 2 mins apart and I was hugging the wall during each one. I called the doctor and informed them my water did not break but my contractions were 2 mins apart. “Come in to be evaluated” was the response. We got in the car at 7am, the hospital was 20 mins away. My husband parked the car in the staff parking lot bc I was in a lot of pain and was unable to walk far. When we went in they wouldn’t let him come up with me because of covid, at-least not until I was admitted. So while I went up he went to move the car. The pain was so excruciating that I had to get up each time I got a contraction. The worse part was I was in so much pain but when I went up to the maternity floor there was no sense of urgency. Asking for my insurance card and I.D(which I know Is standard) but every minute I was popping up out of my wheelchair groaning in pain and walking around. Finally a nurse noticed, came and and took me into a room to check me. Literally 30 seconds of putting the belt to monitor the baby’s heartbeat she saw my pain again and grabbed a doctor to check me. Now all of a sudden it was like flash in motion. I was in active labor, baby’s head visible and the only thing holding my baby in was the fact that my water did not break. I blinked and there were 6 doctors in the room. Blinked again and there was a doctor holding my hands telling me on the next contraction push, we’re gonna pop your water and your baby will be born. I screamed for my husband and an epidural lol(way past epidural at this point). They could not find my husband bc he was still moving the car. I pushed and in 1 minute she was born, as soon as they moved her to the incubator my husband came. The doctors called my delivery a drive by delivery bc it was sooo quick! I gave birth within 30 mins of being in the hospital. 20 mins of it was me going up and being questioned about insurance. My Avery was born on 12/22/2020 at 7:58am. She was 7 pounds 12 ounces. Covid caused my husband to miss Avery’s birth because if he had been able to come up while I was being admitted he would’ve known not to leave and witnessed her birth. Since he was staying downstairs waiting for me to be admitted he thought he had time to move the car so he could stay with me after I was admitted. Sooo over COVID!!!
My first daughter was born in 2013 and I was in labor for 10 hours and 20 minutes. I got an epidural and had the pleasure of seeing clouds and trees while in labor because of it lol. She was born 6 pound 3 ounces. My water broke at 1:00am and I never noticed my mucus plug. Every delivery and pregnancy really is a different experience.
