What to give a friend after mom dies?

My friends just mom died and I want to get her a gift but she’s allergic to flowers. I was thinking some food for her family but her mother in law told me she was going to take care of that. Any other ideas?

Self care things.....bubble bath, face mask, a personalized mug with coffee tea or hot chocolate, or cozy blanket maybe even one with a picture of her and her mom on the it, stuff like that.

Send her a small gift basket if things she like, chocolates, sweet, little DIY spa day kit face mask, hair mask little nail polishes, maybe a book etc

Gift card for food. We got so much cooked food (and coffee cakes for some reason) when my sister died. We didn’t have enough room for it.

Her mil will not be able to cover all food needs so you don't have to rule that out.  Restaurant and grub hub gift cards can be used any time.  
All the suggestions given are good but one thing to remember is  being there after all the dust has settled.  Often times when we lose someone the first few days, week or month there's an outpouring of support and concern.  When that wanes it  can be very difficult.  Don't forget to let her know you're still there and still thinking of her and her family.

Self care stuff or stuff that lets her get out for a bit. A gift card for a massage (of open where you are), face masks/bath stuff, coffee gift cards are great because it gives someone an easy way to go treat themselves if only for a few min but to get out of the house. For some people stuff to occupy them...my best friend loved the more advanced "adult" coloring books after her dad passed because she could go sit somewhere quiet and just almost meditate while she colored something beautiful. I got her a few nice ones and a set of professional colored pencils. I got her a disney+ membership too so she could zone out and watch a movie or laugh.  She will appreciate the thought regardless but whatever you think might help her.

From losing my sister I will say that nothing meant more than just letters and texts about memories of my sister. People don’t really want stuff when a close family member passes. I would have been just the slightest bit offended if someone gave me gift cards etc because I was in a sensitive place and didn’t want to feel like I was profiting off of death. The only sort of gift I got was a necklace with my sisters ashes and I kept an orchid plant from the funeral and it’s still alive 14+ months later

My best friend came over and spent time with me after I lost my dad. That was the best gift. But being in a pandemic that’s not so safe so I’d say order food from them or send them like a Doordash (or other food delivery service) gift card so they can order something to eat.
