Day 5: Happy Black History Month
Day 5: let's meet Bessie Coleman, she was the first African american and first native American to fly an airplane. On June 15,1921 she obtained her pilot license in France due to the US not giving out lessons because of her race and gender. Once she came back to the United States, she realized that in order to make money she has to stand out from the crowd so she decided to start doing tricks. She soon learned loop the loops, banking and tail spins however it wasn't all peaches and cream, Coleman suffered a broken leg and fractured ribs after nose diving 300 ft. However she didn't let that injury stop her she still continue to fly and even saved up enough money to buy two planes. In April 1926, Bessie Coleman along with her co-pilot, William Wills died after her plane nose dived 500 ft in the air and flipped upside down. Both were dead by impact however the media only covered the death of William Wills because he was a white guy. The death of Bessie Coleman was not given the same amount of respect as William Wills, Ms. bessie Coleman deserves all the respect because although her life was cut short she taught little black girls that they too can aim for the sky
