Why is he crying?

Question

Hello, I am a first time mom and my 8 week old son cries and fusses every night from around 9pm-2:30am, he isn’t hungry (I try feeding him), I make sure I burp him, he won’t fall asleep either he just cries and fusses until he wears himself out and falls asleep, he started doing this when he was 7 weeks old so for the past week, anyone know why or what I can do to calm him?

You should look into downloading the Wonder Weeks app! This sounds like your baby may be in Leap 2. The Leaps describe times of fussiness, being clingy, not sleeping well, and different feeding patterns. It’s soooo helpful in giving reasons behind sleep regression, crying, etc. It means your baby is going through new developments - week 7 starts Leap 2.

You could double check baby is at a good temp, is the room is too cold or they are too hot, they could have trouble sleeping. Also - are they swaddled? My son acts like he doesn’t want to be bound, but is actually fussier and sleeps worse when left to his freedom. It could also be that the room is too quiet, do you run a sound machine? You can also try putting a shirt of yours tucked around the bedding (safe sleep practices in mind) so they can smell you. If the baby isn’t getting consecutive hours (90min +) at a time, I would assume they are physically uncomfortable in some way. If the baby is sleeping but up every 90 min to two hours, they may need to practice self-sleep where they learn to put themselves back to sleep and falling asleep on their own during the daytime with you nearby so they can hear and see you, and as they master that, their night sleep should improve as well. Have you tried gas drops? Gripe water? The gas drops help my little one, gripe water doesn’t seem to but I know it does for others. I also have a product called Happi Tummi that helps a lot. It’s basically just a heating bad that wraps around their abdomen. She seems to love it and it generally snaps her out of her funk. Good luck, I know it can be frustrating! It’s 2am and mine just screamed for 10 minutes (don’t know why) and it felt like 2 hours.
