Baby’s last name ??

I see all the time and have family members also with their mothers last name and not the fathers...
I really would like to understand the reasons..
From a mother’s perspective...
A lawyers perspective...
A fathers perspective...

I stupidly decided to give my daughter her dad's last name. Now we're no longer together. I have sole custody, her dad pays $80 a week. He refuses to help with education, medical expenses (even though our daughter has a spinal defect). Everything is solely on me. I really regret giving my daughter his last name. And I would love to get it change to my last name

If I don't have the last name my kids wont either 🤷🏻‍♀️ too much drama when the father has his last name on birth certificate.  Never lol nothing wrong with your baby having the ladies last name at all

My kids have both of our last names but if it’s going to be a single mother why should she give the baby the fathers last name?

My child will have my husband’s last name. I didn’t change my last name. We debated hyphenating them or just simply having both but that was a crazy long name and we didn’t want to subject the kid to that. Our compromise is that every child we have will have my last name as their middle name and his last name as their last name. I know that I will have to carry around a copy of their birth certificates while traveling to prove I’m their mother just in case. But that’s just an extra piece of paper and that doesn’t bother me. My mom had to carry around extra paperwork for my brother and I but that was due to immigration issues. Annoying but not a big deal in the long run.

Both my kids have my boyfriend’s last name. I never really thought about giving them my last name or combining them (that’d be a really long last name, my last name alone is 9 letters.)

I changed my name when I married, so my daughter has my husband, her daddy’s, last name. 😊

There are a lot of different reasons. If the mom and dad don’t share the same last name, I still don’t get why so many people think the man is entitled to it. It makes it more complicated and frustrating for the mother then too, bc you constantly have to carry around paperwork proving you are in fact the mother, especially when traveling. Or people will refer to you by your child’s last name and you have to have to explain that’s not your last name and have this very conversation with most of them lol. 
Personally, my fiancé and I aren’t married. We likely will be one day, but I plan to start my career soon and if I start it before we get married I might not change my last name. We’ve also had our fair share of problems, and I’ve told him that I won’t get married until I see those resolved. (Poor stress management and anger issues, communication, as well as some drinking concerns). So I’m in no rush to get married and want to make sure if we do, we do it right. So that’s another reason I want our child to have both our last names. It’ll make it easier in the event we don’t get married or if I don’t take his last name, and if we do get married and I change my name, we can just file for a name change and drop my maiden name for our son.
