School Closings

Heather

In a nearby city they have decided to close 3 elementary schools. They're biggest reasons are old buildings, saving money, and school capacity. They say it'll save the city $25 million. It would also raise school capacity to 85% on other schools if I understood the other part of the article correctly. The part I was interested in is what they considered a secondary reason. They said it had been 20 years since school districts had been rezoned. They also claimed it would better the racial & socioeconomic diversity in the schools remaining open. Do you think a decision like this could better the education given to children of color & in poor communities? I also wonder if they'll give more money to the schools they've kept open since they now have more kids to educate & care for.

Edit: so I actually looked more into the schools & turns out the worries are accurate. The schools are in areas that are currently poor communities that butt against developing up & coming areas. So it looks like it's all an attempt to continue pushing out the poor & POC for the sake of "progress."
