IV during birth?

Did you have to have an IV when you gave birth? I did with my first but I was induced and that’s how they administered the medicine. Is it a normal part of labor and delivery when you’re not induced? I’m hoping to not have to have one this time 😅😅

Depends greatly where you live and what your hospital protocols are. Keep in mine this is your birth and you do run the show. They can encourage and want you to do things but if you say no, then they can not.

I did not have an IV with either birth. That said, I had some complications when i was delivering the placenta in my second birth, and so they did end up having to place an IV because I was losing consciousness. 
I didn’t want an IV during birth because I was doing unmedicated birth, and I knew that an IV would slow my mobility and distract me from the task at hand.

I chose not to have an iv with my second because I didn’t want my movement restricted at all.  
My first I had one because I was induced
My third I had one because my placenta abrupted and I needed fluids ASAP and they were planning to take me back for a csection (precipitous labor so he was born before they even got the anesthesiologist to my room)

Depends on the hospital. Mine didn’t at first but because I had complications I had to have one. And once you get one, they usually make you keep it in until your discharged. Which SUCKED.

I had one because I was positive for group B strep. I think they are needed certain times but others maybe not. I also had an epidural and needed pitocin so it didn’t bother me.

I did with my first and they kept it in until discharge. I had one placed with my second but literally a couple minutes after it was placed I accidentally ripped it out moving around in the bed during a contraction and they decided not to place another. I liked the IV with my first because the new nurse f’d up a few times and that pain was a welcome distraction from the contractions. But I also liked not having one with my second because no fluids and no pitocin meant I didn’t swell afterward.

I would think so in case of an emergency like you need a blood transfusion or an emergency c section. There wouldn’t be much time to spare trying to get an IV started during those kinds of situations.

I had an IV for fluids. I went through 36 hours of labor so my body was exhausted.

Some do, some dont. When they swabbed me for whatever it is they do in routine exams, I had picked something up. So I was given Iv fluids and an antibiotic. It was annoying. 
One SIL had it, the other did not. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Depends on the hospital. Some require it be placed even if it’s never used that way it’s ready to go in case of emergency. I had one in each arm because I have a blood disorder, so one IV was for meds and one was for blood products.
