Hi I’m a hairstylist! Usually next day hair is the best for colouring. No need to freshly wash it since we’ll be washing it at the salon, but also please don’t come with dirty hair! I’ve had clients show up with greasy, oily hair saying they’ve heard it’s better for some reason, which it isn’t. The hair color can’t penetrate properly through dirt and grease. I just ended up having to wash their hair, blow dry, apply color, and wash again. And charge a lot more for the extra effort!

Stylist here.  The only reason we recommend not washing your hair the day of appointment is because when we shampoo our hair we may scratch our scalp it.  When we put the color on the scalp it’s like putting rubbing alcohol in a wound.  Some of my clients have to wash their hair because they feel dirty.  It’s like cleaning your house before the cleaning company comes over.  Now we don’t like nasty 5 day hair but a couple days no biggy
