I think 8dpo is the earliest you can get a positive. I got a positive at 8dpo personally (in the evening, morning test was negative) but I know many women do not get a positive until a few days later.

People start as early at 6 dpo, but it really isn't recommended. 9-12 dpo for a first test is more reasonable, but I choose to wait until 15-16 dpo. The longer you wait, the more definitive the results should be. Early testing can cause a lot of stress.
