Tampon Tips (newbie)

So I havent lost my virginity, and my hymen is definitely intact because when i tried a regular sized tampon it HURT. And when i had to pull it out it felt like i was ripping a tooth away from its gumb. Any tips on how to make a tampon feel less painful? (I literally shed a couple of tears pulling it out) or should I wait until after I lose my virginity to try tampons? (Also though I'm not sure I got it all the way in? I cant tell what to do!?!?!?)
