Question

safe or not safe? due next month. i want to be able to cover my baby when i go to appointments and to other places, but also want to make sure it’s breathable for him to be in.

In Norway those aren't sold because they are seen as dangerous - trap heat, co2, restricts airflow, and you can't see how baby hold the head. A thin muslin cloth can rise the temperature with 10c or more when placed over the opening of a bassinet, so think how hot an clammy a slightly thicker stretch fabric may make it.

I would say yes to this one because it unzips and allows air circulation. Ones that do not unzip and are completing covering the car seat are not safe. Even if the material is very light and seems “breathable” it can still heat up under the fabric very quickly

It’s fine for short use. I always took mine off in the car and slipped it back on to take seat out.

This looks fine if you’re using it for short periods of time. I plan to use something similar to protect my baby for appointments since she won’t be vaccinated against COVID and obviously newborns can’t wear masks. I used one for my son when I took him to social gatherings because it kept curious hands and faces away from him, and I made a point to lift it up every few minutes to give him air and make sure he was okay. For my daughter I only plan to use it when we’re near others in public, then be sure to lift it up whenever we’re away from people again. The one I have (Copper Pearl) doesn’t have a zipper like this so I’ll have to lift it all the way up to the handle, but the zipper on this looks very convenient. 
Normally any car seat cover like this would be considered unsafe, however we live in unprecedented times so right now we just have to weigh the risks with everything we do. As a parent of a 3yo I’ve definitely had to make more difficult decisions this year for the safety of my son than I ever could have imagined, and I’ll have to do the same when my daughter arrives in a couple of months, but we’re doing our best.
