First day of period

I'm 31yo and I just read an article that has me doubting what I thought I knew my whole menstruating life. I always thought day 1 of a period was the day you get it but I just read it's the day you have it for the whole day, if you get it on Tuesday arvo then Wednesday is the first day?! Is this right and I been counting my cycle wrong this whole time??
