Lovenox injections hurt so bad! 😫

Becky 🌈 Foley

Ok, so I have Factor V Leiden. And started these injections twice a day at 13 weeks, I am not 15w2d and I just have to say Holy cow do they hurt. It hurts going in, it hurts to plunge the medicine in, and then it hurts for a good 5-10 minutes sometimes longer after the shot is given! I’m bruising all over my tummy. Been trying the “love handles” since yesterday so real bruising yet but still hurts like the dickens! I know it’s all worth it in the end to have a healthy pregnancy and baby!

I just wanted to vent and see if anyone else is in the same boat. Or if anyone whose gone through this experience has any helpful advice on how to make the injections less painful I’m all ears!

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

- I have tried pinching the skin and inject the needle into the pinched skin.

- ice injection area before and after to reduce the sting (doesn’t work all that great)

- going in slowly and plunging the medicine in slowly (talk about killing me slowly!) do not encourage that idea!

- tried going for my love handle spot verses tummy. (Btw do not go above the belly button. Did that once and it literally brought me to tears it hurt so bad!)

- did the injection quick and fast but still hurts pretty bad.

- made sure the alcohol was dried before injecting.

- I try to relax into it because I know tensing will only make it worse but damn it hurts.

Hey I’m on 160mg a day and have factor 5 Leiden and had sub-massive bilateral pulmonary emboli and nearly lost life November last year was in ICU. I am on for life but am using my sides, hips, tummy, arms, thigh and top of butt. If it hurts withdraw needle a tiny bit and rub area after but gently to not create bleeding under the skin. You can inject any where that is subcutaneous. Google it and it’s much easier :)

So am sorry that you have to go through this but it does get easier and you have got this mama! Try having a warm shower before you do your jab to soft the skin. When pinching your love handles on the side don’t make the skin too tight by pinching too hard. You can try the inside of your thighs but my bump is too big for that spot now and I cannot see there anymore 😂Inject the needle as far into the fat as you can because of you only stick it in a little bit that is where all your nerve endings sit (close to the skin surface) so the fluid puts pressure on them making it burn. Aim for deep into the fat layer where less nerve endings sit. Once the needle is in I use my little finger like a kick stand so the tip of my little finger rests against my skin so that way when holding the syringe with my hand above doesn’t wobble around.Put a really gripping TV show on to distract yourself while you are slowly pressing the plunger down. If you rush the plunger it hurts more and for a longer time afterwards. Try counting to 30-60 seconds while pushing down to slow you down (it is Natural to want to rush through unpleasant things) and that has helped minimise the pain afterwards. Best of luck and it does get easier!

Wow thank you so much for all your advice! You seem like a pro! I’ll definitely try your technique for my next injection and see how it goes. Thanks a lot! 🙂

I took lovenox shots, and I would use the sides of the stomach. There are areas that don’t hurt as bad. If you don’t like pinching the skin, then kind of stretch out the area of the skin with your thumb and pointer finger and then gently insert, inject and wait a few seconds before pulling out. Afterwards it’s a good idea to gently massage the area so that the medicine spreads out and doesn’t clump up. You will bruise, but it does go away and becomes more routine and won’t hurt so bad.
