Explaining pet death to young children?

We have three great dogs who are 12, 10 & 8 years old. Our children are 7, 4 & 2. We’ve made the difficult decision to have our oldest dog put to sleep this coming week because she’s suffering and her quality of life isn’t there. Our two younger children are especially attached to all of our dogs. How should we go about explaining this situation to them?

I’m sorry that you are having to go through this. It’s never easy but it’s even harder when you know that it will affect your children. I’m a vet tech and the hardest euthanasia’s are always the ones with children in the room. It’s so hard to see them cry over losing their pet but they will come to understand why it had to happen. Best is to prepare them beforehand. Explain to them that your pet is sick and dying. Be direct so it doesn’t confuse them.
