I just started playing yesterday. At this point, there doesn't seem to be much for me to do. Any tips on things I should be doing in the beginning?

I “cheated” a little bit to speed up processes since it goes by real days. I would change the date. I know it is lame but it helped speed up the process sooooo much and now my island is my dream island. Fish a lot and catch all the bugs you can to sell them to Nook’s and save your bells. Make sure you plant money trees every time you see the gold light coming out of the ground. You can also travel to islands past 7pm, destroy everything on the island, dig up the tree roots, pick the flowers, destroy the rocks, and you can catch tarantulas or scorpions as they sell for like 12,000 bells each!

There is a super Mario theme update coming on feb 25. I can’t wait. 
Also, inviting characters to your island helps keep it interesting. I buy my character Amiibo from a friend on eBay. Let me know if you want their page info.
