Will you be circumcising your boy?

We can’t seem to decide on this one.  I’m against, he wants our son circumcised.  Just curious to see what everyone else is thinking.

We didn’t circumcise our son. Outside of the US where for some reason it became a thing for those without any cultural or religious background, but is now becoming less and less common, the only people that do it are those who live in the Middle East for religious purposes, those who are religiously Jewish, or any place where there was historically limited access to clean water such as India for example, which is where the concern for infections arose. 
There is absolutely no medical need for a circumcision for those living with easy access to clean water. In my personal opinion I see it as genital mutilation, which is frowned upon when it’s done to girls in third world countries but for some reason we still do it to boys here. It’s of course it’s everyone’s personal choice, but I see so many people circumcising their sons because they don’t want them to be made fun of 😧 and that, while of course entirely up to the parents, in my opinion a crazy reason to cut off even if it’s a small part of your child’s body just so someone else doesn’t say anything. If it’s there it serves a purpose. In addition to a possibility (however small) of botched a circumcision where the penis lost all of its future ability for sexual function- that was just a hard pass for our family.

Yup. My husband is, my 2 boys are, I'm having a boy and he will be.
No issues and it heals in about 3-4 days.
My husband watches them get it done and said they don't even cry, they numb the area with a cream, cut then right back with me still (usually) sleeping.

I let my husband make the decision. I don't know enough about male anatomy and well, he does. If you do it, from my experience, our baby came back sleeping and was calm. I think every one has their own opinions on it and that's ok.

Since my husband is the one with the penis, he makes the penis decisions. Our two boys are circumcised, one not in the hospital bc of nicu time and one in the hospital and both went perfectly and neither boy was ever in pain or bothered! I’m pretty sure this baby is a boy so we’ll be doing it again! This is such a debated and hot topic with very opinionated people haha so just talk it through with your husband and tell him why you’re nervous and just do what feels right! I also wanted our boys to look like daddy so I was for it

Statistics show it's a 50/50 rate in the US. Some insurances no longer cover it. We chose to go with a pediatric urologist, as I have seen WAYYYY too many OBGYNs botch the circs. Just a thought!

I highly recommend watching the documentary American Circumcision before making your choice either way. If you choose not to then please research current best practice on cleaning. It is no longer recommend to retract foreskin on an intact penis - just wipe the outside.

No, but it isn’t common practise where I am from anyway. Personally, I do not see the point of doing it unless it is for religious/cultural reasons.

In the US, every person I’ve known to have an uncircumcised child or get into adulthood uncircumcised has had to eventually get circumcised due to numerous infections and issues. The women I know who did not initially circumcise their children really regretted it when the kids had to go through the pain of getting it done later. It’s nothing for a baby. It’s really not fun for an older kid or adult. I was totally on the side of not doing it when I read it’s unnecessary, until I knew so many people who took that advice, did not do it, and had terrible outcomes. I think the biggest issue is that because it’s not a norm in the US, people don’t truly know how to properly care for it. So if the kid’s father isn’t uncircumcised and didn’t grow up with other uncircumcised men who all know what they’re doing, expect major issues and to end up having to get it done later.

We have two boys and neither are circumcised. My husband isn't either. There is zero medical reason to have it done so I'm not putting them through it or us taking care of it. I've had too many friends have to redo their son's circumcisions due to issues and I'm definitely not doing it more than once.
