Day 26: Happy Black History Month(long post)
Day 26: There seems to be a lot of transphobia on this app right now so this post will be about 2 trans black women because i have time today. These two black trans women have truly shook the world while you're at home typing hate. The first woman is CeCe McDonald, born on May 26,1989 she is a black trans and bisexual woman. She is also an LGBTQ+ activist. Ms. McDonald is known for stabbing and murdering a transphobic person named Dean Schmitz with a pair of scissors in an act of self defense. On June 5, 2011 Cece McDonald and her friends were leaving a bar in Minneapolis when a group of white people including Dean Schmitz started harassing them calling them "niggers" and "faggots" as Cece McDonald and her tried to walk away from them Dean Schmitz ex-girlfriend broke a glass bottle and slashed Cece McDonald in the face which required 11 stitches. So everybody started to fight and Cece McDonald tried to leave the scene and Dean Schmitz followed her and continued to harass her so in response she took a pair of scissors out her purse and stabbed Schmitz. He later died from his injuries and Ms.Cece McDonald was charged with second-degree manslaughter and served 41 months while being required to pay a $6,410 fee for his funeral. The trial she faced was complete bullshit the judge did not take into account the swastika tattoo on Dean Schmitz chest, the white supremacy group he was apart off, did the judge take into consideration that meth and cocaine were found in his system that night nor did the judge have a representative from the LGBTQ+ community to speak out on the violence that trans women specifically black trans women recieve. Cece McDonald went to a male prison she was not in a woman prison. She was released after serving 19 months. However, her story received so much attention and soon plenty of celebrities started speaking out and starting petitions for her release including Laverne Cox, Cece was in the rolling stone and a part of advocate 40 under 40 list. She also has a documentary called free CeCe. In 2014 she was awarded by Bayard Rustin. CeCe Mcdonald still continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. So I am honoring her for not only living in America as a black trans woman but I am honoring her for not taking no shit from a transphobic person.
The next woman I will be talking about is Marsha P. Johnson. The “P” meaning pay it no mind (which is what transphobic people need to do literally pay it no mind) Born on August 24, 1945 Ms. Johnson was an open black trans woman who became an advocate for AIDS. She was a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising of 1969(yes sis help led a whole uprising and you’re on your couch) She was also a drag queen. At the age of 17, Marsha P. Johnson left her mother’s home with a bag of clothes and $15 dollars. She was scared to express herself and it wasn’t until she arrived in NYC specifically Greenwich village (if you’re from NYC like me then you know) was she finally able to be her true authentic self. She performed as a drag queen at Hot Peaches. In June 1969, when Marsha was 23 years old, police raided a gay bar in New York called The Stonewall Inn. The police forced over 200 people out of the bar and onto the streets, and then used excessive violence against them. But Marsha P. Johnson did not care, she did not back down. She along with her friend Sylvia Rivera helped found STAR, street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries - an organisation to support gay and trans individuals who had been left homeless. She was also photographed by Andy Warhol. In 1992, her body was found in the Hudson River and police ruled it as a suicide however, her friends and family did not say she was suicidal. Her case has been reopened after receiving tons of support from the LGBTQ+ community. Her life and advocacy in the stonewall rising is featured in multiple films including Happy Birthday Marsha(2016) and The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (2017) plus she's been featured in multiple magazines. So for the black trans women who don't take no shit from anyone and for those who continue to live and thrive despite every reason not to i salute you sis keep doing you
