“Web sleuths”/conspiracy theorists
*FYI SPOILER ALERT FOR SHOW*
So my husband and I just finished that Netflix Docu-Series on the Elisa Lam case at the Cecil Hotel
In a nutshell: a 21 year old woman from Canada decides to travel to LA and stays at the notorious Cecil hotel and goes missing and is later found dead and the series is centered around her investigation and the hotel.
Throughout the investigation, there was a ton of “web sleuths” and conspiracy theorists trying to turn this case into something it’s not. One particular theory was about this musician who went by “Morbid”. He made metal music, often centered around death/violence but was not actually any type of murderer or violent person, it was simply his form of expression in his music. So an entire year prior he stayed at the same hotel for a few days and posted a YouTube video just of himself there and these theorists tried to tie his music and stay a year prior to him being her murderer. Despite the police repeatedly telling them he had no involvement, they continued to send him threatening messages and spreading lies all over that he was a murderer. It got so bad that he actually attempted suicide and quit music. He spoke out 7 years later (years after the truth came out and the investigation was concluded-which further proved he had nothing to do with it-he didnt even know her and he was in Mexico at the time) and said not a single person even apologized for falsely accusing him and essentially ruining his life and taking away his passion.
Do you think when these theorists take it that far that they should be held accountable? Especially if he or anyone else being accused of something falsely were successful in their attempt to take their life?
I also couldn’t help but think how all of this affected her family. While they’re trying to get closure and mourn, you have people all over spreading false information about her death.
They became so obsessed with this case despite none of them knowing her. They almost couldn’t accept the truth when it was finally solved that it was accidental due to a mental health episode and continued even after to try to find loopholes. Visiting the hotel, her grave, trying to access restricted areas.
Do you find a large amount of conspiracy theories dangerous in general?
