When do you start brushing babys teeth?

Question

I was wondering, when and how do you brush babys teeth?
How, with what? Those silicone brushes that are put on finger? No toothpaste until they are able to spit?
Basically when is it "needed". I assume at one point you just have to do it to make a habit of it, but does it happen before or after they are able to brush themselves?

As soon as there was a tooth we started getting her used to a toothbrush.  ￼just water until they can spit. We also were told to wipe her mouth out with a wet washcloth before bed

I started wiping gums when they're babies. To start them on a good habit and get them used to it. Once their teeth start popping I get training toothpaste and tooth brush. My son didn't understand the concept of spitting until closer to three, so he didn't use kid toothpaste until then. My daughter mimics us so she was not even two when I felt she was able to do it. I still used training toothpaste until two when I felt she truly has spitting down. Flossing once they had teeth close together. My son is 4 and does mouthwash as well.

When they have teeth you can brush with a little smear of fluoride toothpaste to prevent decay.

As soon as they have teeth just with a soft brush. Baby toothpaste around 9-10 months when my son had quite a few teeth.

We used a clean bare finger on the gums around a year but he had no teeth yet. After he got used to the finger we moved to the silicone finger brush. Once he got teeth we switched to a small regular brush. 
At 3 years I plan to try a kids electric brush.
