I usually double braid them when wet. I cant wrap because I'm a wild sleeper, if it's in a bun it doesn't dry, if I let it free it becomes a rats nest.

nah. a wet scalp it perfect for mildew. and yes scalps CAN get mold. 
u might not notice but sometimes you might find ur hair smelling kind of musty or see/have dandruff if you've left it wet. 
similar to how you make sure to dry your feet so you don't get athlete's foot? it's important that your scalp doesn't stay moist for prolonged periods of time.
