Would you have children with someone who used to be a drug addict (meth, popping pills, tried heroin) but has been clean for a long time?

My husband was an addict. He’s been clean since he was 23 and he’s 35 now. We have a beautiful son and he is a good man. 
He got into drugs as a teen. His mom left when he was just 10 and it screwed them up real bad. His brother is a year and a half older and he started doing drugs around age 14 and got my husband into them. It’s so depressing. They spent a lot of their teens getting in trouble and in detention centers. At age 20 he was working somewhere and had a huge accident (lumber fell on him and he was trapped for hours). When he woke up he was in the hospital. Had to learn to walk again. When he got better he chose to take his lawsuit money and buy a home in another state. He worked on getting off the prescription pain pills from the accident and turned his life around. We met when he was 25. When he told me about his old life, I never would’ve known. 
He’s a strong man. He has will power and strength to not go back to that life. His brother has been clean for a few years now and we are proud to see the difference in him as well.

I need a maybe option because I’d have to weigh a lot of factors, I can’t say hard yes or hard no.

The decision is very circumstantial. What changes have they made so far? Are they active in recovery? Do they have a support system other than you? Are you prepared for possible relapses? 
My husband got clean a year into our relationship. I knew he had past drug abuse issues, but at the time that we met I thought he only drank and smoked weed. Come to find out he was hiding cocaine use and making pretty bad decisions that could’ve cost him his relationship and career. It took me a long time to understand addiction and recovery, but my husband immediately checked himself into an outpatient recovery program through his health insurance and got heavily involved with NA. 
My husband is now 8.5 years clean and we had our first child 5 years ago and have another on the way. Had I not seen how committed he was to changing his life for a consistent amount of time I would have left.  My husband has also never relapsed which I do believe is atypical.

Depends. Is he going to meetings to stay clean? Is he getting therapy? How long has he been clean? What are the triggers? Has he ever relapsed? A lot of stuff comes in mind.

There are a lot more things to consider than the two facts that he used to be an addict and hes clean now. He could be clean now and be a vile human being, so I would not. Or he could be the greatest dad in the world now. Much more to consider than the little bit of info here

I wouldn’t be with someone with a drug history at all. It’s a huge deal breaker for me.

My fiancé use to take a lot of drugs in his early 20’s (he’s now 45!) and was put in prison for dealing back then. He completely turned his life around and hasn’t touched drugs since and has made a good (legal!) career for himself. I’ve never met a more caring loving man,he was scared to tell me when we met as he thought I’d run a mile, I didn’t. 3.5 years down the line we’re getting married and TTC after a few pregnancy losses he’s been my rock when my mental health took a dive recently. We might not be able to visit USA or anywhere else that requires a visa cause of his criminal record but who cares about that when you find the man you love!

If they are active in their recovery and continue to show dedication to working recovery and staying sober, then yes. My husband is a recovered addict of meth and heroin and has been clean almost 6 years. He had 3+ years of sobriety before we got together. He gives me no reason to doubt that sobriety and living his recovery every day continues to be important to him. 
I would even argue that recovered and sober addicts are some of the most emotionally balanced people in our society. They have shown that they are capable of enormous dedication and change. Of course there is always a risk of relapse, just like there is risk with anyone falling into an addiction (especially in America, where doctors very willy nilly prescribe opiates to just about anyone for any reason).

I did. I was an addict myself. We got clean together after I did a short time in jail and he did some months in prison. It’s not fun losing everything, and it sure as hell isn’t fun being in jail. Seeing an old lady get beat up over a phone call and being locked in a cell with other criminals 22 hours a day really makes you rethink your choices. We both completed probation sentences (his more lengthy than mine, requiring drug classes and therapy, and he had to get his GED) and have really changed our lives from what they used to be. I can’t judge someone because of their past, unless they were a rapist or a murderer, obviously, then I’m judging. But if they’ve taken the steps to recover and are doing well, I don’t see why it would even be an issue.
