Birth story

So let me start by saying this birth was a bit traumatizing and way different than my other three birth. My first was 2 hours, and my second and third were 3 hours. I started with contractions first and once my water broke it was really quick after that. All my babies have came early including this one. I was already fully effaced and 4cm dilated at my last check up which was Monday March 1st.

Baby boy had big plans with this labor and decided to break my water at 12am Wednesday March 3rd. I had taken a warm bath earlier and was already laying down in bed. I got up to use the restroom and to tell my husband to come to bed since he was laying with one of our little ones putting her to sleep. Went to the bathroom and felt wet, thought I peed myself so I took off my underwear and peed. When I wiped and got up I felt a trickle so I wiped again thinking it was pee again. Walk over to the sink and as I am washing my hands my water gushed out. Waddled over to my kids room to tell my husband and he woke up so confused lol 😂 got the kids ready and loaded the car up and off we went.

My husband dropped me off at the hospital first and then went to drop off the kids at my best friends house and returned. They did the swab to see if it was my water and it was. I was 4cm and fully effaced still. They got me admitted and my doctor told my nurse to see if my body starts to contract on its own for a while and if it doesn’t then she would start pitocin. I have never had pitocin before so it was all new to me especially that my labors are usually quick and short. Well, from when my water broke until about 10am I had no contractions so they decided to start pitocin since my water had been broken for 10 hours at this point already. Pitocin didn’t really kick in until about 3pm and that’s when my contractions started coming at a consistent pattern.

My husband was the best he helped me through each contraction and helped me in changing positions when I needed to. I can truly say pitocin makes contractions way worse because I was literally crying and throwing up during them when they finally got intense at around 5pm. By 5pm I was in active labor and 7cm already. 6pm came around and I was at 8cm but at this point my contractions were coming back to back with little to no break at all. I was about to give up and get an epidural but my husband knew I didn’t want that and kept pushing me and helping me get through it. I’ve given birth naturally every time so he knew I didn’t really want one. The babies heart rate started to dip with each contraction so they laid me on my left side and gave me oxygen. I was getting nervous and scared since this has never happened to me before. My blood pressure than dropped and had to get medication for it to go up. That last hour was so intense and scary I was shaking and crying. The nurses assured me everything was fine. They checked me again at 7pm and I was ready to go and babies head was right there. My doctor came in she got prepped and at 7:08 pm my little boy was born after just one big push and one contraction. Although, I was in active labor for 4 hours only my water was broken for 19 hours which has never happened to me.

The cord was wrapped around his neck which is why his heart rate kept dipping. Thankfully he was fine but was having a bit of trouble breathing since I was only 36 weeks. I only had him on me for a few minutes before they took him away to the nicu. They had him on oxygen and he responded well later on that night and was breathing on his own perfectly after. His white blood cells were elevated so they kept him for 24 hours and the next morning they told me he would need to stay for 7 days to be treated with antibiotics because it seemed like his body was fighting an infection. The nurses and His doctor thought it was weird because he wasn’t sick or anything so just to be on the safe side they wanted to do the 7 days of antibiotics. The only thing they could think of is most likely since my water was broken for so long he might had gotten an infection or starting to get one. His cultures kept coming back negative so that was great. Thankfully my little boy did very well and after a very long 8 days we finally brought him home today.

Welcome to this crazy wonderful world,
