Does anyone know how effective one dose of the covid vaccine is?

.. against covid AND the variants?
My essential worker friend has one dose of it and I’d really like to see him, physically distanced,, outdoors and masked still though
(Im not eligible yet in my country)
Here in Canada, you get the second dose 4 months later, not 2 wks like the states... ugh

It’s only effective to the person who’s had it, not you. It doesn’t stop the virus spreading, just protects the person who’s vaccinated against serious symptoms which may hospitalise them. If you’re masked and distanced, there’s no reason why you can’t see your friend.

Depends on which vaccine he’s gotten. If he’s an essential worker, he’s been exposed to way more than you will expose him to. 
We have been out and about, masked and distanced since this started and haven’t gotten sick. I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.

2 weeks after the first dose your friend is about 80% protected from infection. If you see him you should still both wear masks, distance, and be outside if at all possible. You are not protected at all. Your friend will not have full protection allowing him to socialize with a single unvaccinated household without masks until two weeks after the 2nd dose. That’s CDC guidelines. Might be different if you are in a diff country.

If you are masked and remain socially distant I don’t see the problem. I’m also in Canada and in a similar situation with the vaccine. I’m in mb and our rules are you can gather with up to 10 people outside on private property (so in your backyard for example) and I don’t think you even need to be masked (though it’s probably encouraged). I don’t think people from other countries realize just how strict our lockdowns have been up here and that we’ve actually not seen the majority of our friends for at least 6 months. At some point we have to do something for us and it sounds like you are taking the right precautions to see your friend!

It depends on the vaccine, but most if the 2 dose shots are up to 80% effective two wks after getting them ^.^ 
However, even if you have the vaccine, as I currently understand it, you can spread the virus, but apparently you tend to be less contagious, so it is fairly safe to be around vaccinated ppl & social distance.
