Anyone have any stories about dating felons?

What was the biggest issue?
What did you like about them?
Did they want the whole “typical” marriage and family after being released?

No, simply because I wouldn’t dare a felon. Finding housing and jobs is harder, and depending on the charges, student loans and furthering education could be off the table. Do you have goals?

My husband is in jail. Never ever date someone you met while in jail. It never works out. Mine went in after we met. His charge is a dwi and he comes home soon. It’s not easy. The transition into what life is out here takes time. This experience isn’t about you, plan on your needs not being met for a very long time. There’s no positives about this relationship. If he goes back I’m not staying because I can’t do this again. Don’t ever talk about your future when someone’s in jail, everything changes once they get out and have freedom again. I don’t understand anyone meeting on pen pal sites...this is the hardest relationship ever. You deserve to have 100% of someone and you won’t like this.

I dated a felon. And it was one of the worst relationships I ever had.
He became controlling of me when he got out and I assume thats because he felt the lack of control he had over his own life. He also was paranoid and felt the world was against him. 
He never was able to land a job and finding a place to rent was nearly impossible with his record unless I moved to some run down terrible area apartments. (You know, were all the other felons go?) And he just was just constantly on trouble. 
I finally got pregnant and I left him. If you stay with someone like that and have kids you have a high chance of having CPS in your life as well and can loose custody.
Unfortunately it is all heartbreak and not worth it.

I did it for a VERY long time. I would advice you to just be a friend. It only leads to heartbreak. They need time to adjust to society. You will never truly know who they are until they don't need your support. If you love him just be a friend. Good luck

I dated an addict/career criminal (car theft, break and enters, etc.). Just don't. It isn't worth it. They are not family material.
Just FYI... I didn't know this about him when I started dating him, and I was super naive.

Some hard TRUTHS.
Our prison system is not designed for rehabilitation, chances are... whatever problem they had will be multiplied, and may even suffer from ptsd. 
Coming out of prison is equally terrifying. How do you become a part of society again, get a job, heal from the past?
So, meeting someone in jail will always be a terrible idea. They need time on their own to get on their feet at rehabilitate. You simply cannot trust their motives, even if they themselves don’t realize they are just trying to seek stability, comfort and healing. These things must come from themselves first, or they will always depend on someone else.
 
Someone you already knew, is a different story. We don’t have the details for advice here.

I dated one and he wouldn't stop getting in trouble, was tired of answering the phone to find out he'd been arrested or having the police show up in the wee hours of the morning of our apartment to arrest him. He was not a nice person, literally instigated a fight with a bunch of tweens and teens at a park (I wasn't there) and got hurt. Fought several other people on other occasions. He cheated on me many times, had an anger problem and just generally thought the world was against him. It was too much for me and after 4 years, I couldn't take it anymore.

I dated a felon fresh out of jail and it was not a positive experience. He had anger/ego issues and was very misogynistic. He was emotionally abusive to me (maybe not related to being in jail but I’m sure it didn’t help) always called me named, told me I wasn’t allowed to have guy friends, would accuse me of cheating constantly. He managed to find a job at Wendy’s but I think his opportunities were limited because of his record. I knew that finding a place together would be nearly impossible because of his record and he eventually quit his job and as much as he said he looked I think he wasn’t really so I knew buying a house was out of the question. Eventually I realized I was feeling suffocated and this guy was a POS and our future together looked very bleak and unpromising. Thankfully we eventually broke up but I wasted 4 years of my life with that mf.
