Help with feeding needed!

Miranda

My baby is 7 weeks and 3 days. He has colic and silent reflux, we have had his tongue-tie done now.

We have been told by the health visitor to give him 2oz of formula every 2 hours as he had jumped from 50th to 91st centile in 2 weeks. He screamed and cried from hunger. After a day or two, we asked the on duty health visitor and GP who both said to go back to on demand feeding. He was much happier.

Then, he got ill. The GP weighed him and he had gained a fair amount more weight but she didn’t mention anything about this being a concern. She referred us to the hospital because he had laboured breathing and the doctor gave us Lansoprazole for his reflux as I couldn’t put him down and was ill myself with laryngitis. She said try it for 14 days but the first week it probably wouldn’t make a difference as he was ill.

Four days later I look him back to the hospital as his breathing was laboured again. This time, the (different) doctor said we were over feeding and that his sickness was down to that (although the GP had said reflux). She told us to stop the Lansoprazole and to feed him 3oz every 3 hours. We did for about 5 or 6 days and he just was a miserable baby. We spent most of these days trying to console him. So we went back to on demand feeding.

The health visitor is due to come tomorrow and I’m really concerned about what she will say about his weight. In his whole life since being home from the hospital, he has only ever refused the bottle during a feed a couple of times but the rest of the time he drains them. I am now doing 5oz bottles usually, unless it’s been a while since his last feed when I do 6. He didn’t finish the 6 but usually finishes the 5. This is much more than the health visitor and hospital doctor said to give him. At his last weigh in a couple of weeks ago, he was about 4.9kg. He was 2.9kg at birth.

So my question is, is he having enough milk (draining bottles every time and then can show hunger signs soon after) or too much (putting on lots of weight)? I’m so concerned about harming him and just feel criticised and not helped. He can’t be put down because of his reflux (the colic is getting a little better) so I don’t want him to be unhappy and discontent through not having enough milk to satisfy him. He last had milk at 6.45am and it’s now 9:10am and he asleep but is displaying hunger cues with his mouth. Please help!

Thank you.
