Can you ask for items back after a breakup??

Question

As the title suggests, can you ask for things back after a breakup? Things that are yours or things that you gave to him (now your ex)?
Like some clothes and some shoes I left and I would like to have them back. 
I'm also wondering about things I've given him? I mean I gave him back the promise ring he gave me and most of his stuff (I forgot to give him back a Hoodie and a necklace he gave me but I plan on returning them) but he hasn't given back the two watches (approx $800 for both) or the link chain I got him.
Just wondering if I leave it or not??

Gifts? No. But stuff that’s yours, yeah. A gift is a gift, and that’s how the court sees it.

You can take back what is YOURS, things you paid for for yourself. Your own shoes, clothes, watches, whatever. But you can’t make him give back something you GIFTED to him. That would be considered his as you gifted it to him.

Your stuff yes, a gift already given now belongs to the recipient. So up to him to decide if he gives it back or not, same for gifts he gave you. An engagement ring is different because it is given with an intent for something like a contract kinda. So if there is no marriage then it isn't fulfilled and is given back. There are actual laws that differ per state in the US at least, about engagement rings. No clue if a promise ring falls under that category though or a regular gift.

I agree with everyone else. You can take back things that are legitimately yours. But you shouldn't take back gifts. You shouldn't feel you need to give him back the necklace he bought you for example.
Personally if an ex gave me back a legitimate gift I gave him, I would feel pretty insulted. As if he hated me so much he couldn't bear to use the gift anymore
