Babies don't self soothe. It's a myth. Look at tantruming toddlers, kids, even teenagers.
I presume what you want is for your baby to connect sleep cycles. You can encourage this by:
- Answering needs*
- keeping lights off and minimal electronics in room
- white/pink noise
- encouraging a healthy bedtime routine that is consistent
- ensuring your baby knows day and night by keeping them active and alert (but not skipping naps)
*literally the most important. You don't have to go straight to them the second they cry, because sometimes they will just wake for a second and go, but definitely if you can tell by their cry that they're awake and clearly aren't going to fall back to sleep. Not longer than 5, none of that Ferber or CIO crap. You want them to feel safe and that their needs will still be met, so they aren't scared of bedtime/darkness or it could come back to kick you in the ass in the future. Being gentle and responding to needs has made it so easy to go from various sleep spaces (bassinet, cot, own room, toddler bed) with an easy transition.
Just like with walking, talking and other skills, babies pick it up in their own time. Even as adults, don't you wake randomly in the night from time to time? Some are good sleepers from birth, some still struggle as toddlers. My daughter is 22 months and can get herself back to sleep 70% of the time without any assistance, the other 20% she will fall back asleep with little assistance (lying down next to her or shhing and patting her bum), the last 10% she requires calm down time with boob, or my partner sits with her while she plays with her soft toys until she gets sleepy again. It use to not happen as often but now its light from about 5am-11pm she's been having a bit of difficulty. We really need to get a black out curtain 😅

Once my son was old enough to know to put the binky back in his mouth, I'd say about 10 months or so

Ours has been sucking her thumb for at least a month I’d say. That definitely helps her sleep and calm down. She’ll be 4 months on May 5th.
