Question

Been with partner for 4years. Found out he went to prison for a short time when he was in his early twenties. He mentioned it (3years into our relationship) but wouldn’t go into detail about what for. 
He can’t understand why it annoys me that he won’t tell me. All he says is that it was for theft and it’s embarrassing. 
I based our relationship on trust, openness and honesty and the fact he won’t tell me is starting to really bother me recently.
The mad thing is (I found out all the details recently) (he doesn’t know I know) and it isn’t that bad. Silly yes but don’t warrant all this big secret.
Why won’t he tell me?! 
Do you think he should tell me seeing as we are meant to be best mates and partners.
I can’t tell him that I know as I don’t want to get the person who told me in trouble.

Anyway, now that you’ve confirmed it’s nothing violent or dangerous, it’s not really your business to know more if he doesn’t want to share. It sounds like he’s embarrassed. If past prison time is a deal breaker for you fine, but badgering him for details isn’t it.

He told you he's embarrassed about it and doesn't want to share the details. Just let it go. A lot of people have done things in the past that they aren't proud of. It sounds like he paid his debt and learned a lesson.

If it’s silly and he finds it embarrassing, I don’t see why he absolutely needs to tell you. People are entitled to privacy even in relationships and marriage. 
You KNOW what it is now, just drop it and leave him alone. Continuing to bother him about it will just piss him off and probably push him away, unless that’s what you’re going for.

Be told you it was theft and embarrassing. You have already verified that's the truth. Why do you need the details? As long as he's telling the truth he is being open & honest. You don't need to know every detail. I've given small hints at things that have happened in my life. I go into detail when I'm comfortable& my fiance doesn't pressure if I don't want to say more.

he doesn’t need to tell you. my fiancé has a secret from me, i know he does. it’s personal to him. he told me it had to do with his family and some sort of abuse and that was it. i’m not going to pry BECAUSE i trust him

People are not obligated to tell you every detail from their past. He was honest in that he told you 1. He's been to prison and 2. It was theft. There's absolutely no reason you need further details. Do you ask for the details of your partner's past sexual experiences?

This is weird. People who have been incarcerated are still people. & since it was nothing like sexual assault, pedophilia or anything like that. Again, who cares! 
But since we’re in your business, what did he do? 🤷🏼‍♀️
