Should the parents be investigated by social services?

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The student responsible for a racist drawing that was slipped into another student’s backpack has been identified.
No other details are available, but Whitley County school officials say the code of conduct was followed to the fullest extent.

The Whitley County mother says she is heartbroken after finding a racist drawing that had been put in her middle school aged son’s backpack.
Through tears, Brandy Mullins told WKYT how upset it made her that her son, 13-year-old JaVon, would be the target of such hate.
▪️Do you think the parents of the student responsible should be investigated by social services? Why or why not?

Yes, he's obviously picked that up from somewhere. And this goes well beyond what I was expecting when I read the title of this topic. Kids don't just casually start drawing depictions of the KKK hanging people.  I wouldn't be surprised if their parents or grandparents were in the KKK. They've has exposure to a hate group and their home should definitely be investigated

I said no. 
I’ve worked for CPS in a couple different states and we just didn’t handle cases like this - it wouldn’t have met acceptance criteria. Just like when kids are bullies, CPS doesn’t investigate that either. And even if they did - CPS would have to prove that a child was in imminent danger to really be able to do anything. And this would be a challenge to prove because if anything, it would fall under emotional abuse which is the absolute hardest maltreatment to prove  and kids rarely, if ever get removed for that. 
At 13 a child could be getting this from the internet, or a uncle or cousin, or elsewhere. 
But of course: regardless of where they’re getting it from, it’s still absolutely disgusting and this kid is probably going to turn out to be a monster. Just not sure there’s an agency to really enforce that a parent stop teaching their kids these beliefs - because of the whole free country thing. Just as numerous parents teach their kids to hate all CPS worker and hate all cops. Nothing can legally be done about that. 
Not saying that it’s right or that I agree with it at all of course. This situation is definitely totally f*cked up. Maybe the school can do something about it under their anti bullying rules or something?

Yes. Behavior like that is completely inappropriate and should be addressed. He is a child, but that probably means there is something going on at home that is allowing him to behave this way.

100%. Kids aren’t born with hate in their hearts like that. Unfortunately that is modeled for them and learned. While the student could be learning that from anywhere, it makes sense to start within the walls of the home with family. Even if the parents aren’t the ones that feel that way or are not teaching their child that directly, it IS the parents responsibility to raise their child to live a life full of acceptance and love; not hate. So in some regard, they are failing either way.

Yes that’s learned behavior, kids don’t just suddenly do stuff like that out the blue. Hate is learned and since he’s able to draw this so well I’m betting his family is part of the KKK or some other neo-nazi hate group.

Definitely how else would that kid have learned that. I remember one case where these parents had their kids taken away for 1) the dad naming his son after hitler 2) the nazi stuff in their home and many other reasons.
