Holiday inn employee 'mental breakdown '
My app doesn't let me post screenshots for some reason. So please bear with me I'll try to sum to up.
A video was shared on Twitter where you can see a hotel employee being filmed by an unhappy customer. The employee (a man) hits himself in the face several times and hits and knocks over the computer and loudly cries. The person filming is upset with him over some sort of mistake (that apparently wasn't this employees fault) and he is harassing him about it and filming. The employee spoke out about it after the video was out out saying that he suffers from BPD and schizophrenia and that the customer was pushing him to a breaking point purposely for a reaction while filming. He always says the customer called him the 'f' slur before the video started. The employee told the customer he has a mental illness and needed a moment to think, and was further harassed by the customer.
The video was shared on Twitter by a journalist/film maker (I've seen him cited as both not sure if it's one or the other or both) who considers himself 'the worlds #1 race baiter'. He shared the video with more of a racial context , highlighting that the customer filming was black and the employee was white. I haven't really seen it discussed as a race issue much in the comments I have seen but this was mentioned in some of the articles I found.
I've seen a lot of comments about this across a few platforms. Many are saying that it was bullying and harassment , he was purposely pushing the man to his breaking point and mocking him while he was struggling. (Seems to be the most popular opinion, a go fund me was started for the employee) Others are saying someone with a mental illness shouldn't be working with the public, and should either not work or work a job away from people. It seems most people didn't agree with the initial framing of a race issue , I saw very few comments agreeing with it.
It was really hard to watch. I've worked customer service and I've cried at work many times being abused by customers and I really do feel sorry for him. I think that especially right now people live to film everything for a reaction and it's sad that he couldn't just give the guy some space rather than pushing him further. And to have it all filmed and out there will probably be devestaing for him finding a new job. I find the idea that people with mental illness should just 'stay home' or only find careers away from the public is a very ableist and unrealistic.
Sorry if I missed anything my app keeps crashing as I've been trying to post this
